THE NEIGHBORHOOD CHILD GARDEN HELPERS HAVE INSPIRED A REAL REVOLUTION- FOODSCAPING FOR ALL (within walking distance)
A few weeks ago we had a brainstorm. The mission “How can we help our neighbors?” The ideas started from simple things like sidewalk chalking cheerful messages to dropping off a roll of toilet paper to every house. Then the brilliant kids, Abby (10), Aidan (13) and Callie (5) came up with a brilliant idea… LETS CREATE FOODSCAPES FOR NEIGHBORS.
With the help of Horrtube sensation Jim Puttnam, we got started and installed 3 in the first week! The kids and neighbors are excited to see these foodscapes grow and are waiting with great antiquation for the first harvests.
Of course to get started we had to order our favorite compost, Soil3. This is our insurance policy for success!!
The next step was to choose the location for each property. We are targeting S+FULL SUN, EXISITING AREAS IN THE LANDSCAPE. The idea of a foodscape is simple- incorporate your favorite veggies into your landscape and grow beauty and bounty together using the same resources! Now need for expensive lumber, just invest in quality compost and get busy planting in your existing areas!
With three new installations planted and growing, we are feeling like a professional team! Our goal is to create at least 10 more by the end of May. Yes, that sounds ambitious, but this is such a great way to stay active, keep the kids actively engaged and help the people who live nearest to us. It is my greatest hope that we will inspire others to take this idea and create your own Neighborhood Foodscape Revolution!
